Karl J. Rickert, P.E.

BACKGROUND:

Mr. Rickert founded Rickert Engineering, Inc. in 1986 and serves as President of the firm.  He is a registered professional engineer in seven states and the District of Columbia.  Mr. Rickert has developed an expertise in the efficient design and detailing of current structural systems and the modification and restoration of existing structures.  Mr. Rickert gained considerable experience in both large and small building projects.  This experience has included work on commercial, institutional and residential projects for both the private and public sectors.

MAJOR PROJECTS:

Samples of major projects on which Mr. Rickert has been in responsible charge of the structural design include:

  1.     Shock Trauma Center, Baltimore, Maryland - Ten story steel frame hospital building with roof heliport.

  2.     Nottingham Center, Towson, Maryland - Eight story conventionally reinforced concrete office building.

  3.     NASA Space Telescope Building, Baltimore, Maryland - Five story steel framed office/research facility.

  4.     Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene, Baltimore, Maryland - Four story vertical expansion of an existing  four story structure.

  5.     Virginia Towers, Towson, Maryland - Fifteen story mixed use project including residential and office space.

  6.     Electric Test Facility, Rutherford Plaza, Maryland - Two story office and industrial test facility.

  7.     B&O Central Office Building, Baltimore, Maryland - Fifteen story office building renovation.

  

MAJOR RENOVATION PROJECTS:

More than half of the work performed by Rickert Engineering, Inc. has been related to the investigation, repair and modification of existing structures. This work often required a visual survey of the existing conditions, testing of the materials and an evaluation of the capacity of the existing structure. The results of the investigations were used to develop repair and modification alternatives, and estimates of probable cost. Contract documents have been developed based on the alternatives selected by the owner. Samples include:

 

  1.     Repairs to the Terraces and West Stairs, U.S. Supreme Court, Washington D.C.

  2.     Repairs to the 601 North Calvert Street Parking Garage, Baltimore, Maryland

  3.     Repairs to the Promenade Deck at the Ocean City Convention Center, Ocean City, Maryland.

  4.     Repairs to the Balconies at the Christ Church Harbor Apartments, Baltimore, Maryland.

  5.     Historical Restoration of Christ Church, St. Michaels, Maryland.

  6.     Hurt Gymnasium & Swimming Pool, Morgan State College, Baltimore, Maryland.
